Trusted Employer Scheme (TES) – Client Feedback Session Update

We are pleased to share a summary of key developments following the Department of Home Affairs’ Trusted Employer Scheme (TES) client feedback session held on 22 May 2025. These updates signal significant and positive changes for the future of TES.

Key Enhancements to the TES Framework

One of the most notable proposed reforms is the full digitalisation of the work visa application process for TES-accredited employers. This major shift aims to align South Africa’s immigration system with global standards, significantly reducing administrative complexity.

A key advantage of this digital transition is the elimination of in-person submission requirements—a long-standing hurdle within the current immigration process. The move is expected to streamline processing, improve the applicant experience, and reduce turnaround times.

In addition, the Department of Home Affairs has confirmed a second round of TES accreditation, expected to open in July 2025. This round will welcome applications from both current and prospective employers who meet the eligibility criteria.

Given these advancements, it is increasingly important for qualifying organisations to secure TES accreditation in order to benefit from faster processing and enhanced government support.

As a trusted immigration advisor to many TES-accredited employers, we remain committed to guiding our clients through these changes with clarity and consistency.

Highlights from the Feedback Session

Second TES Accreditation Round: Set to open in July 2025, featuring a new online application platform.

Employer-Driven Submissions: The Department is exploring a model similar to the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme, which would allow TES employers to directly submit visa applications for Critical Skills, Intra-Company Transfer, and General Work Visas—eliminating the need for in-person appointments by applicants at embassies or visa centres.

Additional Proposals Under Consideration

Exemptions for TES Employers: Continued exemption from the Department of Labour certificate and SAQA evaluation, which would effectively exclude TES employers from the Points-Based System.

Spousal Work Rights: Introduction of work rights for spouses of Critical Skills Work Visa holders is currently under departmental review.

TES Graduate Sponsorship Initiative

TES-accredited employers are invited to participate in a graduate sponsorship initiative coordinated by Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA). The program involves an annual contribution of R200,000 per employer, with a goal to raise R25 million annually over two years. Funds will be used to enhance immigration service delivery capacity.

The Department will issue a formal proposal outlining the initiative's structure in due course.
